WELCOME TO YEAR 5 

The year 5 staff would like to wish everyone a very warm welcome back to school. It has been wonderful to see the pupils wearing their uniform with pride and greeting friends and staff with happy smiles, kind words and good manners. We had a wonderful first term and we are excited to continue our learning journey together. 

YEAR 5 STAFF 

If you need any support or would like to discuss how we can best work in partnership to support your child in school, we are always here to help. Your class teacher is always the first point of contact, followed by Mrs Sloan as Phase Leader of Y4, 5 & 6. For any advice on special educational needs, it may be appropriate, after speaking with the class teacher, to also contact Mrs Whitehead, who is our school Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENDCO).    

Smaller queries can often be answered at drop off times, however for more private conversations, or those that may take a little longer, please make an appointment by discussing this with the teacher or calling the school office instead. 

Please be advised that collection time is a very busy time, and not a time when we can give you our full attention.

ATTENDANCE 

Good attendance and punctuality are vital, not only for learning, but also to help pupils settle into their new school routine, make friends and grow in confidence.  

Each week, every class with 100% attendance is rewarded with a £10voucher, which can be spent to celebrate the achievement in whatever way the class decides. We have our weekly extra play award for every class that hits 96% and certificates for best class and most improved. Being on time is vital to help your child settle in the morning and access lessons to the full. Our classroom door opens at 8.40am for the start of the day, closing at 8:55 and collection time is at 3.15pm.  

If you have any queries with regards to attendance, please contact our Attendance Officer Miss North or Designated Attendance Lead Andy Murphy.  

HOMEWORK 

Building good learning habits at home and reinforcing learning that happens at school is important. To help with this, regular homework will be set and engagement with this greatly appreciated.  

Daily reading of books sent home- these are changed weekly  

Weekly Spelling practise to be completed on spelling shed  

Weekly maths practise to be completed on Maths shed 

Regular and ongoing times tables practise online using TTRockstars 

(pupils will be provided with usernames and passwords) 

Children will bring a homework book home for them to complete homework in.

READING 

Developing strong readers is our priority. All pupils read in school daily and have already this week had reading practise sent home, coinciding with their reading stage. Reading each day, with your child at home, will help to accelerate learning and help your child to grow in confidence. Please help us by writing in the blue home-school reading record when you read with your child, keeping the home school partnership strong. We will be celebrating regular reading by awarding Reading Champion Badges in school, on our class display. Pupils have already started working towards earning their first badge, which is fantastic.

Class messages… 

Our PE day is on Wednesday. 

Swimming will be on a rotation between 3 classes weekly. Please see the table below for your child’s swimming lesson dates. As there are three classes in year 5, we will follow the timetable slots below to give each class equal opportunities to swim. 

Please ensure all jewellery (including stud earrings) are removed before coming to school on swimming days. False nails must not be worn, These are health and safety requirements. Children will need to bring a swimming costume or shorts, goggles, swimming cap (this is a MUST for all children) and a towel. 

On Monday sessions, children will need to be collected at normal time back at school.  

However, on Tuesdays, all children will be dismissed from Ellergreen swimming baths, either by adult collection or if the permission slip below gives consent, they will be allowed to walk home alone. For any child who attends an afterschool club on the swimming day, staff will walk your child back to school for this. Please make sure your swimming slip is returned to school before they begin swimming lessons.
